MAKE A MINI DROP SPINDLE FOR KIDSFor ages 8 and up, a  perfect educational and unique arts activity for your summer!

In this introductory workshop we will learn how to spin our own yarn using a drop spindle. Spinning has a rich history whose threads weave through all cultures. It is a practice we often overlook which, even after all this time, still supports the fabric of our everyday lives!

We will learn of the different fibres available to spin into yarn, covering the preparation of raw sheep's fleece from cleaning to combing techniques using a hand-carder. Following that, we'll learn to use a drop spindle and spin wool roving into 1-ply yarn. If time remains towards the end of the class, we can take our spun yarn and ply it together. (With regards to wool allergies, please contact the centre directly as early as possible so we can try to prepare an alternative).

Our drop spindles are made of easy to source materials, instructions will be provided on how to make a simple top whorl spindle at home (with the assistance of an adult) if a participant wishes to continue practicing after the class.

The week following this class on July 26, feel free to bring your handspun with you if you plan to attend our Youth-Learn to Weave class from 1-4pm.

This class is $30 per registrant. All materials are included. The class is 3 hours long and instructed by Weavers' and Spinners' guild member Julia.

A completed permission form must be submitted for each participant at the beginning of the class.

If the participant and yourself are both comfortable please complete and submit a photo release as well.

Permission forms are provided upon your arrival.
