***Prerequisite - Beginner Gourd Art***

Students have the choice of bringing a prepared gourd, or buying and preparing their gourd the morning of the class.  The gourds need to be cleaned on the outside, opened on the bottom with a hole between 5"-8" wide, cleaned and sealed on the inside.  It is important that the inside is smooth, as it will give a better sound.  If not smooth, sand again, and seal with paint or varnish.

In the class at 1p.m., students will complete a design on the outside of the gourd, including marking where there will a place for hole/s to let the sound out.  They will cut the sound hole and smooth the edges.  We will use the drum sander to be sure the bottom is flat and smooth.  When this is done, students will glue on the drum skin, trim the edges, and finally add the spring that will enable the drum to make the sound of thunder.

The Instructor will provide the drum skin and spring, as well as some ideas for the design on your thunder drum.

Students need to bring an apron, a dust mask and a prepared gourd.
